The fabrication of a steel sheet resistant to abrasion consists of subjecting the sheet to a heat treatment in the hot forming operation or after austenitization by reheating in a furnace, for realizing the hardening one: (a) cools at a medium cooling rate of greater than 0.5 degrees C/s between a temperature greater than Ac3 and a given temperature between T and T-50; (b) then cools at a core medium cooling rate Vr less than 1150 x ep-1.7 and greater than 0.1 degrees C/s between the temperature T and 100 degrees C, ep being the thickness of the sheet in mm; (c) cools to ambient temperature and possibly effects a planishing operation. The temperature T is defined as being T = 800 - 270 x C asterisk - 90 x Mn - 37 x Ni - 70 x Cr - 83 x (Mo +W/2).
