Method for determining the composition of a circulating refrigerant has the following steps: realization of an isenthalpic expansion using an expansion unit; measurement of pressures and temperatures up- and downstream of the expansion unit; and repetition of the expansion and measurement steps for each refrigerant constituent. The measured pressures and temperatures are linked in a system of equations relating to the mass enthalpy of refrigerant. The solutions to the equations are found using a dichotomous method. An Independent claim is made for a system for determining the composition of a circulating refrigerant.
