Antimicrobial peptides (I), and their derivatives and fragments, are new. Antimicrobial peptides of sequence (I), and their derivatives and fragments, are new. X1-Lys-Ile-Pro-X2-Ala-X3-Lys-Gly-Ala-X4-Arg-Ala-Leu-X5-Ala-Ser-Thr-Ala-X6- Asp-Ile-Ala-X6-Phe-X8-Arg-Lys-Arg-X9 (I) X1 = amino, Arg or Gly; X2 = Ile-Asn or Val-Glu; X3 = Ile-Lys, Ile-Arg or Leu-Lys; X4 = Ser-Arg-Ala-Trp, Lys-Ala-Val-Gly-His-Gly-Leu or Lys-Val-Ala-Gly-Arg-Ala-Trp; X5 = Asp-Leu, Asn-Ile or Asp-Leu; X6 = Tyr or His; X7 = Ser-Ile, Ser-Ala or His-Leu; X8 = Asn, Asp or His; and X9 = hydroxy, Glu, Asn or Lys-His. Independent claims are also included for: (1) polypeptide (II) that includes (I); (2) isolated polynucleotide (III) that encodes (I) or (II), also sequences (IIIa) that hybridize to (III); (3) chimeric gene (CG) comprising (III) or (IIIa) linked to a constitutive or inducible promoter and to a terminator; (4) expression and/or cloning vector that contains (III), (IIIa) or CG; (5) host organism that contains the vector of (4); and (6) plant cell, or plant, that is resistant to bacterial and/or fungi and contains (III), (IIIa) or CG, for expression of (I) or (II).
