The unit, especially for transferring knitted tubular articles such as stockings or socks between a storage position (P) and at least one shaping position (F), has pairs of hollow parallel contra-rotating rods (2) to receive and transfer the articles. Each pair of rods has offset bends in the form of cranks that cause their ends to move closer together or apart as they are rotated, applying a variable tension to the articles. Each pair of rods is carried by a mobile carriage (4) on a turntable (5) which turns the knitted articles from one post to another.
