The cryogenic centrifugal compressor is controlled by reference to a curve (Copt) linking a first parameter (NU) representative of the speed of rotation of the compressor, and a second parameter (X) representative of the mass flow of the compressor. The method for control of a cryogenic centrifugal compressor includes selecting a predetermined curve (Copt) which can be represented in the form of a first parameter (NU) representative of the speed of rotation of the compressor, shown in relation to a second parameter (X) representative of the mass flow of the compressor. The speed of rotation of a downstream compressor is regulated according to the relative values of the instantaneous suction pressure of the upstream compressor and a variable set pressure. The variable set pressure is regulated according firstly to the instantaneous value (NU4(inst)) of the speed of rotation parameter for the downstream compressor, and secondly to the theoretical value (NU4(th)) of the first parameter located on the predetermined curve (Copt), corresponding to the instantaneous value (X4(inst)) of the parameter representing mass flow.
