A Chlamydia pneumoniae antigen which contains a protein originating in Chlamydia pneumoniae outer membrane, a process for producing the Chlamydia pneumoniae antigen which comprises solubilizing the cytoplasm and cytoplasmic membrane of Chlamydia pneumoniae elementary body with the use of an ionic surfactant and eliminating the solubilized parts to thereby take up the residual parts; a method for assaying anti-Chlamydia pneumoniae antibody which comprises using this antigen; and a reagent for assaying anti-Chlamydia pneumoniae antibody which contains this antigen. The Chlamydia pneumoniae antigen has a high species specificity and thus shows scarcely any false negativity, which causes clinical problems, and a reduced false positivity.
