The escalator or moving pavement has drive chains (12) guided over at least one drive wheel. Fitted adjacent to at least one chain link (16) is a raker (30) for the removal of dirt which may lie especially on a guide rail of the drive chain. The raker is mounted to move around a rotational axis (32) which is co-axial with the bearing axis of the chain roller (22). The rake may have a scraper with a scraping edge which acts upon the feed rail and/or return rail. The raking action of the rake is supported by gravity force.
