The climbing robot has a foot (2) with a number of passive suction cups (1) to fix the foot on a surface by mechanical pressure only. Each suction cup has a pull tag (3), and all tags are lifted to release the robot foot, via an axially moveable pull mechanism. Each foot has several small suction cups positioned so that the tags can be brought together at the smallest possible distance, so that the mechanism can work with a small stroke. A device measures adhesion force after every down movement of the foot, to correct adhesion threshold value and contact point.
