Electric arc welding device comprises an alternating current rectifier, an inverter connected to the rectifier via an intermediate circuit, and a scanning unit for acquiring the temporary progression of a primary current and assigned to a detector so that an instantaneous value for the primary current can be detected and stored at the time of a crossover of the magnetization current. A value corresponding to a secondary current is calculated from the instantaneous value for the primary current. An Independent claim is also included for a process for operating an electric arc welding device.
