During operation, the wavelength of the fundamental mode of the field excitation curve of the stator winding is controlled. A stator winding is used that comprises at least five turns, each associated with a respective static converter. The static converter is driven to achieve a three-times positive or negative phase sequence of the fundamental oscillation of current through the five or more winding turns.
