Apparatus (10), for the analysis of biological cells (12) within a fluid (11), has a container (13) to hold the fluid as a capillary vessel. A piezo electric unit (16) is at the outlet end (15) of the container, to generate voltage pulses for a contraction to form droplets (18) to be passed to the analysis system (19). The droplets contain either no cells, or a whole number of cells and at most 5.
