The synchronous automatic transmission has the engine (1) coupled by a power converter (2) to the automatic transmission (3). This has a shift selector stage (5) responding to commands from the controller (4) in addition the shift positions are sensed (6) and fed to the controller. The gear changes are made relative to a determined neutral position that is learned and if changes the position is updated.
