Method for forming the average value of a periodic signal has the following steps: sampling of the periodic signal within a signal period; determination of the difference between each of the sample values and the average valve of the preceding periods; formation of the average value of the differences and; addition of the average valve of the difference values to the moving average value determined for preceding periods. An Independent claim is made for a device for forming the average value of a periodic signal that comprises a memory unit, a difference formation unit and an average value formation unit.
