The gear lever (5) has a handle (5.1) and a pivot (5.2) near the steering column and the ignition switch (6). The locking device (1) has a projection (3.1) which engages in a notch (5.3) in the end of the gear lever to lock it in the N or P positions. An electromagnet (4) acts on a C- shaped locking lever (3) to hold it away from the gear lever. A spring (2.1) moves the locking lever toward the gear lever. The projection is hinged on the locking lever.
