In a process to make a paper sorting assembly, sorting slits (3) are formed by the gaps between adjacent profiled rods (2) in transverse grooves (4) in rod holders (1, 1'). Each rod holder is in direct contact with the next or separated by a narrow gap. Profiled rods (2) are clamped within the grooves (4) by push-pull rod holder movement (1, 1') and welding. The sieve has e.g. three rod holders side-by-side with a lateral spacing of no more than 2 mm, pref. touching. the outer rod holders are moved in a single direction, while the middle rod holder is moved in the opposite direction. The rods are then fixed in these displaced positions e.g. by welding.
