The method involves measuring a 2D temperature distribution of the radiating surface of a calibration radiator, deriving a 2D distribution of the radiation density, limiting the radiation density to the region detected by the measurement device to be calibrated and weighting the limited radiation density with the 2D relative sensitivity in the field of view of the measurement device for use as the true radiation density for calibration. The method involves quantitatively measuring a two-dimensional temperature distribution of the radiating surface of a calibration radiator, determining from this a two-dimensional distribution of the radiation density of the radiator surface, limiting the radiation density to the region detected by the measurement device (13) to be calibrated and weighting the limited radiation density with the two-dimensional relative sensitivity in the field of view of the measurement device and using as the true radiation density for calibration. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a device for implementing the inventive method; (b) a calibration radiator; and (c) a method of evaluating data.
