Virtual online process linking for distributed engineering systems in the field of automated equipment is based on a remote desktop protocol (RDP). A communications channel (8) via an RDP to a server (2) is built up by random clients (4) within a system (1) by means of online access. Process/project data is tunneled via the channel. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) A method for linking processes in an automation environment for distributed engineering systems; (b) and for a server for making available an application needed for an engineering task; (c) and for a client for getting access to automation devices supplying process/project data and for building up an online communications channel of any duration between a client and a server.
