A method for separating heavy particles from a mixed airflow of heavy and light particles has a duct (5) to direct the mixed airflow under the conical top (1) of the separator housing. The conical top sits on a cylindrical centre section (3) which sits on a funnel shaped base (9). A cylindrical inner wall (4) is fitted to the conical top to create a double wall. An extract port (6) is fitted through the outer wall near to the top of the double wall. The position of the bottom edge of the inner wall is selected for optimum separation of the light and heavy particles. The heavy particles drop into the funnel and are extracted by a discharge duct (7, 8). The separator is supported on legs (10) for easy discharge into vehicles.
