A braking system for an artillery projectile has an umbrella shaped textile element (16) secured to a rotating ring (15) set into a groove behind the nose of the shell. The brake is deployed from a folded position in a recess in the shell and extends into a shallow cone shape, restricted by an outer ring and by the cut of the textile. The brake is deployed by an explosive charge which ejects a covering sleeve. The textile is reinforced by radial tapes with reinforcing strips (34) at the outer ends.
