The method involves an actuator operating a valve, determining the actuator (S1) and/or valve (S2) position, the actuator setting the valve speed depending on the actuator and/or valve setting and compensating for valve play with a valve play compensation unit (28) with a predefined maximum play compensation. The valve speed or actuator setting speed is limited if the actuator or valve position falls below a defined safety separation from a stop.
