The fire escape corridor (1) in a cinema or other public building has lights (4,6) in the ceiling for illumination and indication of the escape route toward the exit door (2). There is an indicator light (5) above the door. The corridor may have a window (3) for illumination by ambient daylight. The emergency and illumination lights have separate power supplies (11,14). There is a light sensor (10) near each emergency light.
