A fluidic muscle contraction unit has a pressure driven contraction tube (10) with light or ultra sound length sensor transmitter (17) and receiver (18) on the inside (13) of the end pieces (11, 12) or in one module (16) with a reflector at the other end and output unit (19) to determine the distance by comparing the modulation phase using down conversion and low pass filtering.
