The transmission method has performance enhancing proxy devices (PEP) inserted in the transmission path for the data packets between a transmission station (FH; MH) and a reception station (MH; FH), for improving the performance of at least part of the transmission link by monitoring the data transmission and initiating re-transmission of defective or lost data packets. A decision device (SP) routes encrypted data packets which cannot be handled by a performance enhancing proxy device along a bypass path (Y) for the latter.
