The device retains data characterizing at least one gouge (2) and has at least one electronic, non-volatile memory that is directly integrated into the gouge. The data characterizes the geometry of the gouge and the non-volatile memory is in the form of a transponder (4). A reader (6) for the memory is arranged in the surroundings of the gravure system (5). AN Independent claim is also included for the following: (a) a gouge for a gravure system .
