PURPOSE: A new red ginseng acid polysaccharide(RGAP) having an immunoregulatory effect on mammals separated from Ginseng Radix rubra is provided. Because the RGAP exhibits an anticancer and immunoregulatory effect, life extending effect and antitumor effect on a mouse transplanted with cancer cells, a pharmaceutical composition containing the same can be effectively used as an anticancer and immunoregulator. CONSTITUTION: The RGAP has a sugar composition comprising 41.6 to 60.0% by weight of glucuronic acid, 2.5 to 7.5% by weight of galacturonic acid, 18.8 to 33.4% by weight of glucose and 1.1 to 2.1% by weight of arabinose and a molecular weight of 12,000 to 450,000. Ginseng Radix rubra is extracted in lower alcohol, and the residue thereof is heated in water to produce a hot water extract, which is dialyzed and centrifuged in lower alcohol to produce the RGAP.
