PURPOSE: A method, a mercury carrier body and a fluorescent lamp are provided to introduce a limited amount of mercury into the envelope of a fluorescent lamp during manufacture of the lamp. CONSTITUTION: A method comprises a step of forming a lamp(10) having an air evacuation pipe(14) with an open end arranged therein, wherein the lamp is equipped with a ball retain structure; a step of emptying the interior of the lamp through the open end of the air evacuation pipe; a step of arranging a ball made of an inert material between the ball retain structure and the open end of the air evacuation pipe in the air evacuation pipe, wherein the ball includes a selected mass of coating containing one material selected from silver, gold and indium all over the area of the selected surface of the ball, and the ball contains mercury on the coated area; and a step of sealing the open end of the air evacuation pipe. The amount of the mercury introduced into the lamp is limited by the selected mass of the coating on the ball.
