A method of detecting Escherichia coli contained in a test sample by bringing the sample into contact with a specific phage infected with E. coli which comprises using a phage expressing a fluorescent protein in the form of a fused protein together with a phage coat protein on the coat of the phage and having a defect in a lytic enzyme. In particular, this method comprises detecting fluorescence at a strong level emitted from the fluorescent protein of the phage adsorbed by E. coli and/or detecting fluorescence at a strong level emitted from the fluorescent protein expressed in E. coli caused by the adsorption of the phage.
