The invention relates to the switching of low bit rate connections between input modules and output modules of a component of a network (for example BSC, RNC, TRAU). According to the invention, the input modules (ILIC) and the output modules (OLIC) form a first switching level. At the first switching level, several low bit rate (TDM-I) connections are grouped respectively into at least one ATM via the input module (ILIC). These low bit rate connections are located in the input module (ILIC) and have to be transmitted to the same output module (OLIC). At the second switching level, the ATM switching center (ASW) guarantees the connection of ATM connections to transfer information in ATM cells. Then, at the first switching level, ATM connections are converted by the output module into the low bit rate connection (TDM-O) of at least one input module (ILIC). The combined switching at two switching levels represents a particularly economical solution for specific functions for mobile telephony, while ensuring acceptable voice quality with good use of ATM bandwidth.
