Compositions and procedures are provided for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases that are associated with the imprint. Such compositions and procedures are useful for restoring a normal imprint model. The compositions comprise pharmacological agents that are involved in the imprint and that can be used in preventive and therapeutic procedures to restore a normal imprint model. Such agents can restore a normal pattern of imprinting in cells. Other methods of the invention include means for identifying pharmacological compounds that exert their effect by restoring the normal imprint on chromosomes and genes with abnormal imprinting. In addition, the invention could also be used to identify new compounds that exert their effect by restoring the normal imprint in diseased tissues that have an underlying abnormal imprint.
