A combination of microbially converted whey and organic acid is added during a raw cellulosic material pre-treatment or cooking step in a pulping process. A treatment agent based on microbially converted whey is used for the production of paper pulp, where it used in combination with one or more organic acids for the pre-treatment of the cellulosic raw materials or during cooking of these raw materials.
