PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a broadcast receiver, a television broadcast receiver, a video signal scaling circuit, and a video signal scaling method wherein the circuit scale can be reduced without the use of a variable filter and the performance of applying sufficiently practical scaling processing to a video signal can be ensured. PSOLUTION: The number of pixels in the horizontal direction of a video signal is doubled, and the number of pixels of the video signal in the horizontal direction is compressed or expanded on the basis of a companding coefficient given externally. After that, a fixed band limit is applied to the video signal, the number of pixels in the horizontal direction is interleaved by a half, and the video signal is written in and read from an image memory 27 on the basis of the companding coefficient.
