PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a modulation method for light beam by a coherent phonon and a phonon modulator for performing amplitude modulation or phase modulation of light beam such as a laser beam in a frequency of a tera-hertz region.;SOLUTION: Femto-second laser pulse beam (1) having 1 to 200 fs pulse width, 1 nJ to 1 J pulse energy and 200 to 1,000 nm wavelength is made incident on a solid sample (2), the coherent phonon (3) to be a lattice vibration having uniform phases is excited in the solid sample (2) to change the reflectance or the transmittance of the solid sample (2) and the amplitude intensity or the phase of another light beam, made incident on the solid sample (2) whose reflectance or transmittance has changed, is modulated.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
