PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a developing device which can prevent image formation in the state not fed with a developer even when the developing device in the state not fed with the developer is erroneously set at a printer on the occasion of device maintenance work, such as periodic developer exchange and to provide a method for discriminating presence or absence of a developer of the developing device.;SOLUTION: A toner concentration sensor for detecting the toner concentration of the developer consisting of two components; a toner and a magnetic carrier, by detecting a change in the magnetic permeability of the developer by acting a magnetic field to the developer, and a control section for controlling the toner concentration in accordance with the output voltage of the toner concentration sensor are premised. It is decided that the developer is not fed when the change rate of the output value of the toner concentration sensor is below a reference value in accordance with the change rate of the output value of the toner concentration sensor before the change of an agitation speed of the developer and the output value of the toner concentration sensor after the change of the agitation speed of the developer and on the other hand, it is decided that there is feeding of the developer when the above change rate is above the reference value.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
