PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide gene-recombinant Zoysia japonica Steud. suppressing a shade avoidance reaction such as a dwarf internode and petiole, a short leaf, increased branches and a dark green leaf color, assuming a tough appearance and exhibiting enhanced resistance to biological and nonbiological stresses. PSOLUTION: The gene-recombinant Zoysia japonica Steud. is composed of a plant cell transformed with a modified oat phytochrome A gene (S598A) whose serine 598 codon is substituted with an alanine codon. The gene-recombinant Zoysia japonica Steud. includes a recombinant DNA construct containing the S598A gene inducing strong suppression of the shade avoidance reaction, and a recombinant plant produced by the method and a bred seed obtained from the recombinant plant are also disclosed.
