The riser system is for deep seas and has a rigid steel, aluminium, or composite catenary lower section 13 connected to a flexible, titanium or composite, upper section 10, and a buoyancy section 16, situated at the top of the lower section 13, preferably tethered 17 to a vessel 3. The buoyancy section 16 is elongate, extends lengthways along the rigid pipe 13, and may be made of foam. The riser may have a plurality of rigid and flexible pipes 10a-d, with at least one pair joined at a right angle. The joints between the rigid and flexible pipes are spaced along the buoyancy section 16, with the rigid sections running through it. The buoyancy section may also have a pipe-in-pipe configuration, with a plurality of bulkheads dividing the tube into a plurality of closed chambers. Valving enables fluid flow into the chambers giving control of its buoyancy. There may be a plurality of the rigid risers that each has its own buoyancy unit or a single buoyancy unit for a bundle of the risers. Methods of installing this riser system are also disclosed.
