Device comprises means (DV) for measuring the angle of rotation (delta) of a motor vehicle steering wheel, first (c1) and second (c2) means for measuring the longitudinal velocity (U) of the vehicle and its yaw velocity, and means (c4, c5) used in conjunction with the prior means to calculate the vehicle lateral acceleration (ay). Said acceleration calculation means include a Kalman filter (c4) integrating a vehicle dynamic behavior model. The invention also relates to a corresponding method.
