The projectile (1), made with a fragmentation casing (2), has a protective sleeve (4) round its active section to control the fragmentation. The sleeve comprises a hollow cylinder in sections that can be moved by a drive to modify its position, or discharged by an ejector (5a). It is made from a fritted material or a compressed powder of a heavy metal, such as tungsten, which slows down rapidly in air.
