An air flow is cooled in a main exchanger (5) before it is sent to the double column. A low pressure gas enriched in oxygen (OG) and a residual nitrogen flow (WN) are taken from the low pressure column. These are heated in separate passages in the exchanger, before being ejected to atmosphere. Production of liquid oxygen, liquid nitrogen and gaseous nitrogen by air distillation in a double column device (1) with a medium pressure column (8) connected thermally to a low pressure column (9). The flow enriched in oxygen and the residual nitrogen flow are mixed downstream of the exchanger before using them to cool air (3) to be distilled and then discharging them. The flow enriched in oxygen and the residual nitrogen flow exchange heat with water which in turn exchanges heat with the air to be cooled. All the gas enriched in oxygen taken from the device is discharged to air.
