The driver warning system has an on-board system (11, 12) permanently emitting a light signal and receiving a coded radio signal (81). A loudspeaker in the vehicle triggers an audible message when a warning signal is received. A fixed roadside installation has a sensor (7) for the light signal from the car to trigger a radio transmitter (8) which emits a code indicative of the risk at the site.
