The sleeping area of the bed is divided into nine segments (1, 2, 3) which can be individually adjusted in order to protect a patient to develop bedsores, or if he/she already suffers from them, to help to ease the pain. The segments (1, 2, 3) are interconnected with an electrically driven mechanism (4, 5, 6, 7) and covered with a special mattress, which is not compressed, even when moved into extreme positions. The overall height of the sleeping area can be adjusted to a level facilitating the nurses to perform the required tasks in a convenient position.
