Radiation source for short impulses comprises at least one highly repeating femtosecond laser system (1) connected upstream of a device reducing the impulse frequency, and a device for amplifying the individual impulses. The amplification device is a nitrogen laser-pumped dye volume (5) arranged in the radiation path of the laser system. The impulses with reduced frequency are used for synchronous control of the nitrogen laser (4) whose radiation is focused in the dye volume. Devices are arranged so that the impulses emitted by the laser system are guided through the excited region of the dye volume. Preferred Features: The dye is methyl-DOTCl in ethanol (0.5 g/l) or Styril 9 in DMSO (1 g/l). A saturated absorber (6) formed by HITCl and having non-linear characteristics is connected downstream of the dye volume to completely suppress the low intensity impulses and to have almost no effect on the amplified impulses.
