A sulfur-humus barrier for ground water streams contains a difficultly water-soluble mixture of (a) an inorganic sulfur compound; and (b) a humic material. Independent claims are also included for (1) multi-barrier systems in which at least one barrier contains a reductant and at least one an oxidant; (2) degradation of nitrate, nitrite, nitroaromatic, aromatic amine, ammonia or (halo)organic contaminants in ground water using the barrier; and (3) humic material which has been treated with a reductant and/or ammonia for use in the barrier.
