A method for stripping the sheathing from electrical conductors or optical-fiber cables in which the cable- or conductor-sheathing to be removed without being clamped or tensioned in the jaws of the pliers is cut into down to the core, by each two opposite-facing wedge-shaped cutters, in the region of the insulation sheathing. In a subsequent working step by one of the pairs of shaped cutters, the sheathing is removed by an insulation-stripping movement in the lengthwise direction of the cable core, while a supporting force acts in the opposite direction to the insulation-stripping force on the insulation sleeve. An Independent claim is given for pliers for insulation stripping.
