The map data updating method has a digital map card (12) of a road network replaced by an updated digital map card (14) and difference data (18), provided by comparing the map card with the updated map card, is used for updating an auxiliary information map (22) for the onboard navigation system. An Independent claim for an automobile navigation system is also included.
