Piston ring for an internal combustion engine comprises a chromium nitride wear-protection layer applied by physical vapor deposition in the region of a running surface
Piston ring comprises a chromium nitride wear-protection layer (3) applied by physical vapor deposition (PVD) in the region of a running surface (2). Nitrides formed from aluminum, silicon and/or zirconium are inserted into the wear-protection layer. The layer is maximum 70, especially 5-50 microns thick. Preferred Features: The wear-protection layer contains 20-60 at.% chromium, 10-50 at.% aluminum and 30-50 at.% nitrogen, in which the sum of chromium and aluminum is 50-70 at.%. The piston ring is made from steel and is nitrided before the wear-protection layer is applied.
