Use of 0.01-2 wt.% polymer as gas hydrate inhibitor is claimed, in which the polymer has a number average molecular weight Mn of 1000-1000000 g/mole and consists of (a) 1-70 mole-% vinyl alcohol units, (b) 30-99 mole-% vinyl or allyl ester units, (c) 0-69 mole-% acetal units and (d) 0-30 mole-% units derived from olefinically unsaturated, 2-18 carbon (C) compounds, which may contain 1-100 alkoxy groups and/or nitrogen (N) or sulfur (S) atoms. Use of 0.01-2 wt.% polymer as gas hydrate inhibitor is claimed, in which the polymer has a number average molecular weight Mn of 000-1000000 g/mole and consists of (a) 1-70 mole-% vinyl alcohol units of formula (I), (b) 30-99 mole-% vinyl or allyl ester units of formula (II), (c) 0-69 mole-% acetal units of formula (III) and (d) 0-30 mole-% units derived from olefinically unsaturated, 2-18 carbon (C) compounds, which may contain 1-100 alkoxy groups and/or nitrogen (N) or sulfur (S) atoms: R1 = 1-6 C alkyl; R2, R3 = H, COOH, 1-10 C alkyl or 6-12 C aryl, in which the alkyl and aryl groups may have carboxyl, hydroxy, sulfo or halogen substituent(s); R4 = H or methyl Independent claims are also included for; (1) Gas hydrate inhibitor containing the above polymer; (2) Inhibition of gas hydrate formation by adding the polymer to an aqueous phase in contact with a gaseous, liquid or solid organic phase.
