Car hardtop roof design comprises front and rear parts with respective kinematic systems of linkages arranged so front sits below raised rear part in setdown but moves forward for lockable closure.
Adjoining roof parts (2,3) are held to a shared base frame (6) and can move relative to the frame (6) by individual kinematic system (7 and 8). In the setdown position the forward part (2) rests below the rear part (3) and for transfer from closed to setdown the rear (2) part first lifts and then lowers onto the now-retracted front part (2). When closed, the base frame (6) lies below the rear part (3) using four-part linkage for the front part (2) and a multiple linkage for the rear part (3). The base frame (6) is coupled to the rear roof part (4) or again is coupled to the coachwork proper.
