Cooling ladle and/or converter slag comprises pouring the slag into a container (11); immersing one or more immersion bodies (14) made from copper or copper alloy in the still liquid slag, the bodies absorbing a part of the heat of from the slag; and removing the immersion bodies from the slag after heat equalization. An Independent claim is also included for a device for carrying out the process. Preferred Features: The cooling step is repeated several times, in which the immersion bodies are cooled between immersions, preferably in a water bath. One or more immersion bodies having a geometry and/or heat capacity and conductivity fitting each slag charge amount are used.
