To control the movements of mobile maintenance units at a textile machine, and especially yarn splicing robots (14a,14b), each is allocated to a working area (A,A',B,B') with a number of workstations. If a maintenance unit is blocked from the workstation on its shortest route, e.g. by an operative (26), then another unit is deployed to move to that workstation from a different direction. The working area lengths can be adjusted according to the workloads of the maintenance units. The control unit monitors the positions of the mobile maintenance units, and their activities.
