Determining gas permeability of sand cores for casting lightweight metals comprises heating a core sample in a heating section (Se) to a heating temperature; cooling to a cooling temperature in a cooling section (Sk); and acquiring the gas/vapor stream leaving the cooling section over a defined time period. An Independent claim is also included for a device for carrying out the process comprising a sample vessel (10) for a core sample, a cooling arrangement (14) for cooling a cooling section of the sample contained in the vessel, a heat source for heating a heating section of the sample contained in the vessel, and a measuring arrangement (9) for acquiring a gas/vapor stream leaving the cooling section. Preferred Features: The core sample has a longitudinal shape.
